Carolina’s Story
by Martha Macdonald

Miles from Honduras where she was born and spent her first nineteen years, Carolina Victoria Long talks about education, friendships, and different cultures.

Her parents, both elementary school teachers, were positive role models who believed in helping others.  Although Long has always wanted to help others, she did not want to be a teacher.  “When I was a child, I was interested in medicine.  I changed my mom’s bandages when she came home from the hospital following surgery, and I was fascinated with the lemon/honey remedy my mom believed would cleanse her system.”

Currently a student at York Technical College where she is pursuing a certificate in nursing, Long plans to be an RN by the time she is thirty.  She is grateful for the teachers and advisors who have helped her to focus and develop her interests.

Between classes and working at Westminster Towers and the Grid Iron, Long finds time to cook special dishes from Honduras. She will serve spaghetti sauce with cheese over fried green bananas to friends on holidays and birthdays.  Her favorite music is Salsa, and she smiles when she hears about classes in Zumba.  “That dance is similar to our ‘Punta’ in Honduras.  It’s basically about movement of the hips.”

She advises students to be patient, stick to their goals, and focus on what they are doing.  “I will be an RN when I am thirty,” she says, a twinkle in her eyes.
