James'
Story “My brain is on tick-tock,”
James Harper explains, as he talks about his project for MET 231
(Machine Design). “My partner and I are building a clock.
It’s a gravity-driven pendulum. It’s a desk version of a
grandfather clock, and we have to finish it by Friday morning.” Working twelve hours a day, he is “on overload” now, especially as he finishes final exams and anticipates York Tech’s graduation ceremony on May 9. After fifteen years of working, Harper decided to return to college. He chose York Tech where he is majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology. “York Tech has been a lot of fun, especially the campus marshmallow catapult contest, but classes have been a lot harder than I expected.” He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society of two-year colleges, and he has had perfect attendance. An avid motorcyclist, he hopes to go to UNC-Charlotte for his Bachelor’s degree. Meantime, it is “tic toc, tic toc,” and he pictures a mouse running up his clock when it sits on an instructor’s desk---or his own----in the years to come.
