College Success Stories

Jody's and Cedric's Story From completely different backgrounds, Jody Kendrick and Cedric Sanders have a common bond: receiving their Associate Degree in Nursing at York Technical College on May 6, 2007, and locating jobs as RN’s. “This is truly what I have always wanted to do,” Sanders says, his dark eyes beaming. After high school, he went to Wingate University on a football scholarship, then left to work at Freight Liner. Laid off in 2001, Sanders received an offer from WIA to return to school. “I seized the opportunity. It’s been a long road, but I’m glad I came back to school.” Married and the father of three children, Sanders says his family is extremely supportive. Following graduation, he plans to work as an RN in OR at Carolina’s Medical Center. In the meantime, he will head to Columbia to do psychiatric rotation at the State Hospital. Kendrick echoes these feelings. “My mother was a nurse at the Rutherford County Hospital when I was a little boy, and I used to love to hear her tell stories. She cared so much about her patients. Going to the hospital with her was an awakening for me.” Like Sanders, Kendrick worked for a number of years before returning to school. “I’ve been in construction, and I’ll never forget the summer of 2003. I traveled back and forth from York Tech to Charleston---from classes to work and back.” His cell phone going off, Kendrick smiles and takes a deep breath. “But it’s been worth it. I’d do the same thing all over again.” Teachers who have been especially inspiring are Millie Hathaway, Amy Newton, and Kelli Cobb. |
