College Success Stories

The Pear Tree Group Just as the sun rises each morning, so, too, do Greg and Carrie Collins come daily to sit under the Bradford pear tree next to the A Building at York Technical College. They talk to each other and to other students. “Guess we should call ourselves ‘The Pear Tree Group,’ and I don’t even like pears,” Carrie laughs.
Greg and Carrie, both full-time students at York Tech, have been married for eighteen years. “We grow closer everyday,” Greg says. “You know, we do everything together---studying, gardening, and raising our three kids.” His blue eyes twinkle as he talks about their three teenagers. “Our son, Bryan, will begin classes here in January.” “I always wanted to go back to school,” Carrie adds. “Greg wanted to come, too.” As a disabled veteran still working his way through rehabilitation, Greg had to find a new career. “I had my own business for ten years, and now I’m learning what I’ve never known before—how the world really works.” Greg is focusing on Electronics Engineering. Carrie says that her classes in Business Management and Accounting are challenging and exciting. “I’m having some great learning experiences, and I’ve met some wonderful people.” Members of “The Pear Tree Group” agree. Carrie, Greg, and others have some sort of financial aid.
“Well, I’ll see ya’ll later,” Carrie
smiles, and begins pulling her bookbag on wheels. She’s off to
class. Later, she and Greg will head down the road for their home
in the country near Fort Lawn to
weed in the flower beds, pick some herbs for supper, spend time with
the kids, and, of course do those homework assignments for the next
day. |
