“Treasures Education and Those Enpanadas”
by Martha Macdonald

Born in Chile in 1969, Roderigo Diaz has lived in the United States for 33 years.  Even though he continues to go to festivals and to enjoy the foods of South America, especially Enpanadas (dough filled with meat, olives, onions, and hardboiled eggs and baked), he claims South Carolina as his home.

“I love the people, the scenery, the seasons,” he smiles, those dark eyes twinkling.“And finishing York Tech with an Associate in Arts is something I never dreamed was possible.”

Diaz began taking classes at the college in the summer of 2002 under Chapter 31 of the VA Assistance Program.  “York Tech is a great place to be.  The people are nice, and some of the professors have taught me to look at things in another way.”

Diaz has enjoyed interacting with other students and meeting various challenges.“Persuading my classmates in World Literature to look at Beowulf as a potential member of the Marine Corps today was something I wanted to do, and I had fun.”

He works at the York County Natural Gas Company and encourages all people to go to school.  “It’s never too late for anybody to take classes and to become more educated.”
