Shavonda’s Story
Carter wrote a narrative about this festival for her reading class. She is enjoying all of her classes at York Tech. “I guess I should knock on wood,” she laughs, tapping on the desk. “So far, I’m making good grades, and the teachers are positive. I had the chance to come to York Tech, and I’m happy. People need to come and see for themselves what a wonderful school it is.” Carter attributes her interest in higher education to teacher, Lynn Moorefield, and to family. Carter’s mother and sisters have finished their college degrees, and one sister is in a nursing program in Bombay. At York Tech, Carter is participating in the Medical Office Assisting Certificate Program. Studying vocabulary words, she finds herself wondering whether to take a casserole or a cake to the Sunday gathering. The menu includes chicken, turkey, ham, roast, corn, stringbeans, blackeye peas, rice, gravy, cream potatoes, rolls, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, apple pie, cakes, watermelon, grapes, grapefruit, cranberries, olives, carrots, and sweet potatoes. “It’s also a time just to be together and relax.” She says that families enjoy decorating with flowers and bringing out those special antique platters and bowls. Carter hopes that her own children will come to treasure this special tradition and education as much as she does. |
