Terry's  Story
by Martha Macdonald

“Nineteen Years Later”

“I was a student here at York Tech nineteen years ago,” Terry Mobley said, “just eight credits shy of my Associates Degree.”   When her husband became critically ill, Terry had to choose between work and school.  She gave up classes because she needed to work in order to take care of her husband.  “My credits were too old to transfer to the same institution in 2006,” she smiles, “but God gave it all back to me through the WIA Program.

Tired of being laid off from jobs because of a company’s downsizing, Terry was delighted to hear about the WIA Program from the Workforce Center on Highway 5.

For six weeks, she took classes and studied grammar, ways to resolve conflict in the work force, and more.  “It is a grounding program which gives encouragement and hope to those who have lost jobs.”  At the end of the session, Terry received the North Star Award, as well as a certificate which she shows employers and includes on her resume.

Following this session, she enrolled in York Technical College where she is majoring in Office Systems Technology.  What’s more, her twins, Dexter and Webster, have taken classes here with her.  “To go to college with your children is challenging because I’m dealing with the parenting aspect of encouraging my children on one end of the spectrum and motivating myself on the other,” Terry continues.  “The boys are proud of me.  Sometimes, we all even mildly compete, but it’s always in a fun, loving way.”

Not only is Terry excited about her classes and all of the friends she has made, both faculty and students, but also about her role as mentor to others.  “I have a passion for others, and I want to help others.  It is important to understand what often motivates people to behave as we do.  Sometimes, we wear masks and a façade because we have been hurt.  We fear pain and more rejection, and the Lord has graced me to be able to understand people and to help them.”

Her husband is proud of Terry, too, and he encourages her.  She will be the first member of her family to graduate from college.  She says that there have been several instructors who have greatly encouraged and motivated her to continue.  Terry will motivate others in the same way, for she believes that God uses her to help others find a new lease on life.  “Everyone has the potential to bloom,” and she loves seeing students, both those at the college and the little ones at the Child Development Center where she serves as a workstudy grow, become, and learn.  In addition, “I am practicing the social skills which I learned in the WIA Program, and I anticipate finding employment in my area of study when I finish in 2008.”
