Doretha's
and Tereatha's Story

When
twin sisters, Doretha and Tereatha Ward came to York Tech last year, they were nervous, apprehensive, scared.
After all, both
sisters had worked in textiles most of their lives. After
graduating from Finley Senior High School in Chester in 1970,
Doretha and Tereatha began sewing for Chester Sportsware.

Stephen's Story

But everything changed
with Hurricane Katrina. “I lost all of my paintings,” and then my
father became ill.” That’s why Stephen Fairchild moved to South
Carolina. “I wanted to take care of him.” After Stephen moved, he
got his GED, then enrolled at York Tech. “I love this place. All
of the teachers are great, especially Ms. Thompson.”

Dan's Story

After
working in a variety of job settings, Dan applied for a job at
Schumacher, Inc. He thoroughly enjoyed his work there, but the job
was outsourced. “Uncertain of what to do, I enrolled in the WIA
Program and came to York Tech.

Margaret's Story

Margaret
really enjoyed doing her clinicals at the nursing home, then at the
hospital. “I am truly grateful to York Tech, especially to Mrs.
Saylor and Mrs. Hamilton. At 45, I needed assurance.” The mother of
four, Margaret smiles and says that her children are so proud.
“Mom, you look so cool in your uniform.”

Mark's Story

Mark
Talford’s travels include going from home to work and from work to
school or from home to school. A native of Lancaster, Mark is a
student at York Technical College where he enjoys the Industrial
Maintenance Program. More |
Melissa's Story

“It’s
taken me a long time to find myself,” Melissa says, her gray-blue
eyes wistful, “but I finally have, and York Tech is the best thing
that’s happened to me in a long while. I feel a freedom here that
I’ve never experienced, and I am getting something nobody can ever
take away from me.”

Terry's Story

When
her husband became critically ill, Terry had to choose between work
and school. She gave up classes because she needed to work in order
to take care of her husband. “My credits were too old to transfer
to the same institution in 2006,” she smiles, “but God gave it all
back to me through the WIA Program.

"Because
I’m a full-time mother, wife, and work as a teacher's assistant,
I don't have a lot of time to sit in a classroom. I have wanted
to go to college and find a better paying job for years, but I
never had the time."

Cyprien, a student at York Tech in 1996, returned to the campus
recently to share stories of Hope Christian School, a school which
she recently founded in Baillard Village in her native Haiti.

Gail's Story

Gail George,
after returning to York Technical College, insists that the key to
success in college is reading. “Reading opens a new world.” In
fact, George, the mother of four, has enjoyed reading since
childhood, and she does not hesitate to say that “school was the
place to succeed and achieve recognition when I was young.”

Rebecca's Story

certified beekeeper in York County, a breeder of South African Boer
goats, and a coin collector, Rebecca Keller manages to do well in
her studies at York Technical College. “I have really enjoyed my
time here, especially the history class with Mr. Sturgis.”

Ferrell, a student from Chester, is taking courses in pursuit of
an Associate in Arts degree from York Tech. After that, she plans to
transfer to a four-year college with a journalism school, perhaps
the University of South Carolina.

up in New York City, became an LPN 18 years ago after seeing the
compassionate and competent care given to his young daughter while
she was fighting a losing battle with cancer.

for the rest of her life, and she is thrilled. Her large, dark eyes
talk as she discusses her classes in nursing and her plans.
