Dan's
Story
In 1986, Daniel Cole moved from Bangor, Maine, to
South Carolina to be nearer his brother, Donald Alfred. After
working in a variety of job settings, Dan applied for a job at
Schumacher, Inc. He thoroughly enjoyed his work there, but the job
was outsourced. “Uncertain of what to do, I enrolled in the WIA
Program and came to York Tech. It was scary; I’d never been to
college before.” Having worked in inventory as a receiving clerk at Schumacher, Dan knew that he could handle accounting and would enjoy studying it at the college. “Out of school for 35 years, I decided to catch up and improve myself. I have always wanted to go back to school, but I’ve never had the opportunity. “I’ve met some terrific people here at York Tech, and they have influenced me. I think of Ms. Paul, Ms. Adams, Ms. Feaster, Dr. Macdonald, and others. They’ve given me tools, and I am on my way.” Indeed, Dan is on his way. He walks around campus, carrying his back pack, stopping now and then to have a cigarette and exchange a story with other students. He has found some study partners who join him in the library for review sessions and encouragement. Dan is married. His wife is also a student. She is working toward her R.N. degree at USC-Lancaster, and she gardens as well. His son plays varsity football, and his daughter is a member of the Thespian Society. Dan’s hobbies include woodworking, metal work, electronics, fishing, and hunting. “I’m passionate about reading now, and I’m determined to catch up with what I missed out on in the past.” Dan loves to tell people about being two inches taller and two minutes older than his fraternal twin. “I’m Daniel Wentworth, and he’s David Winthrop. The nurses at the hospital named us for people in the Old Testament because my mother and father had no idea what to call their twin baby boys.” Dan is happy that he moved to South Carolina. “My brother, Donald, has always been my mentor. We’ve always had fun together.” |
