Doretha's and Tereatha's Story
When twin sisters, Doretha and Tereatha Ward came to York Tech last year, they were nervous, apprehensive, scared. After all, both sisters had worked in textiles most of their lives. After graduating from Finley Senior High School in Chester in 1970, Doretha and Tereatha began sewing for Chester Sportsware. When the company closed, they went to Schumaker in Richburg where they stitched and sewed until their jobs were outsourced. “These
were the only jobs we ever had,” Doretha says, “and we weren’t sure
what to do.”
So off the twins went to the unemployment office where they learned about the WIA Program at York Tech. “We had to realize that textiles are leaving South Carolina,” Dee adds, “and Tee (that’s what I call my twin) and I decided on the Entrepreneurial Certificate.” “Dodie’s right,” Tee says, her dark eyes twinkling. “Then, we can open our own business in interior design in Chester where we grew up.” Dodie smiles. “We just love to decorate. I’m always decorating the house. Why I have already put up valentines, and Tee likes to cook. ‘Mac and Cheese’ is her speciality.” “I put eggs and all kinds of cheese in my ‘Mac and Cheese.’ That’s what makes it different. Both sisters agree that their college days have been an adventure and that they’re grateful for the opportunity to be at York Tech. They credit Ashley Segal with helping them secure their internships in the library and Phyllis Hefney for teaching them so much. “Growing up in Chester with seven other siblings was exciting,” Tee, the older twin says, “and being here at York Tech is exciting,” Dodie concludes. The twins will finish in December of 2008. |
