Grant Funds York Technical College’s Women-in-Trucking Program

ROCK HILL—York Technical College recently announced that it has received full funding from the South Carolina Department of Education for its Women-in-Trucking (WIT) program. The $10,000 project will seek out women who are interested in the college’s Professional Truck Driver Training program and offer them financial and other support services, including non-traditional career counseling. The goal of the project is to train and place at least 10 women in trucking jobs.

In addition to the state Department of Education and York Technical College, other partners in the program include the Employment Security Commission’s One Stop Center, the Catawba Indian Nation, and the York County Department of Social Services.

Truck transportation has become a complex business. New safety regulations and technological advances have transformed one of the nation’s largest employers into a highly-skilled industry. The result is strong employer demand and good entry-level incomes. Currently, less than seven percent of truck drivers in South Carolina are women.

The Professional Truck Driver Training program at York Technical College began in 1995. Since that time it has maintained a 100 percent placement rate for its graduates. The 320-hour program’s quality instruction and the professionalism of its graduates have earned it a strong reputation in the transportation industry.
