York Tech to Host Carpentry Skills Competition

February 28, 2007

ROCK HILL—On Friday, March 2, York Technical College will host the SkillsUSA District Carpentry Contest. Carpentry students from as far away as Aiken and Greenville will compete for a spot in the state SkillsUSA Carpentry Championship at the state fair grounds on March 9-10.

The event is sponsored by York Tech and by the generous support of the Home Builders Association of York County.

SkillsUSA (formerly known as VICA) is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.

What: SkillsUSA District Carpentry Contest

Where: F Building on the York Technical College campus

When: Friday, March 2, from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. (carpentry project) followed by written test

York Tech's Building Construction Trades program, which is credentialed by the Home Builders Institute, the workforce development arm of the National Association of Home Builders, is a comprehensive program that combines academic instruction and practical, hands-on training. Students receive instruction in safety, estimating building costs, carpentry, residential and commercial wiring, residential and commercial plumbing, HVAC, print reading, and building codes.

The building industry faces a shortage of 65,000 to 80,000 skilled craft workers each year. This shortage is expected to continue in the next decade due to job growth projections, declining workforce numbers and a lack of training opportunities.

York Tech offers an associate degree in Occupational Technology with a specialization in Building and Construction Trades, a diploma in Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Mechanics, and seven certificates: HVAC Installer, HVAC Service Technician, HVAC Systems Design, Building Construction Management, Residential/Commercial Carpentry, Residential/Commercial Plumbing, and Residential/Commercial Wiring.
