New Space on York Tech Campus Gives Veterans a Place of Their Own

ROCK HILLYork Technical College will open new facilities next week that will greatly enhance services for the veterans on its campus. In a newly-remodeled suite of rooms in the Student Services building, veterans will take advantage of three comfortable new spaces designed just for them: a fully-equipped computer lab, a quiet area to study between classes, and a lounge, which will also host special events for veterans.

York Tech has always enjoyed a reputation as a military-friendly college for providing high-quality, real-world education and training to veterans seeking to gain new skills, enhance existing skills, or translate the skills they learned in the military to the civilian workplace. As part of the college’s ongoing commitment, it has established the new space for veterans—including students, faculty, and staff—to get connected with one another and find the resources they need to succeed.

Sherina DuBose-Tillman, who is overseeing the initiative for York Tech, said, “Going to college can be a difficult transition for anyone, but when you combine that with the transition to civilian life, you can see what a challenge many of these men and women are facing. Veterans’ Services is where they can come for the support they need—from the college and from each other.”

An opening celebration will take place on Monday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be speakers and a ribbon cutting ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend.

“I know I will be coming here all the time,” said Bernard Feemster, a student who served in the U.S. Army for 10 years before coming to York Tech. “It’s obvious that a lot of thought has been put into creating this space, and making sure it would be useful to veterans.”

York Tech’s Veterans’ Services facility was made possible by the generous support of the South Carolina Army National Guard, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and members of the York Tech faculty.

In addition to the regular services offered by Veterans’ Services, the new facilities will also host weekly guest speakers from York Tech’s Counseling and Support Services, faculty, and community organizations on topics such as adjusting to college, learning strategies, and getting the most from your veterans’ benefits.
