York Tech Recognizes Distracted Driving Awareness Month

ROCK HILL, SC  York Technical College is creating awareness to prevent texting and cell phone use behind the wheel by joining The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Distracted Driving Awareness campaign.

The USDT has dedicated the month of April to distracted driving awareness due to the increase of accidents caused by cell phone use. Distracted driving can change a life within seconds. In 2012 alone, 3,328 were killed in distracted driving crashes. Thousands of people are losing their lives because people continue to use their cell phones while driving, whether handheld or hands-free. As an effort to spread awareness and decrease the number of people who use their cell phones while driving, York Technical College is posting flyers, making social media announcements and handing out brochures on the dangers of texting and driving.

Not only is the college encouraging people to stop texting and driving, but it is also encouraging people to:
-Recognize that hands-free devices offer no safety benefit.
-Understand the dangers of the cognitive distraction to the brain.
-Tell others about the dangers of cell phone distracted driving.
-Turn off electronic devices and put them out of reach before starting to drive.
-Be good role models for young drivers and set a good example.
-Talk with your teens about responsible driving.
-Speak up as a passenger and your driver uses an electronic device while driving.
-Offer to make the call for the driver, so his or her full attention stays on the driving task.
-Always wear your seat belt. Seat belts are the best defense against other unsafe drivers.

Brochures and flyers will be available at the 2014 York Technical College Health and Wellness fair on April 16 from 9 a.m. 12 p.m. in the Student Center. For more information contact Yolanda Feaster at
