ROCK HILL—On Thursday, May
3, teams of York
Technical College Engineering Graphics Technology (EGT) students will
compete in the Fifth Annual Marshmallow Catapult Competition. This unique
and fun event will begin at 12:30 p.m. on the front lawn of C building, next to
Anderson Road, on the York Tech campus. In case of rain, the competition will be moved inside to
the Institute for Manufacturing Productivity.
Spectators are welcome to attend.
Each of the teams has
designed and built—according to complete design drawings—a
custom catapult intended to toss marshmallows as close to 50 feet as
possible. The project is the capstone project for the first year of
computer aided drafting and design courses in the EGT and Mechanical
Engineering Technology programs.
The rules of the competition reward consistency and
accuracy rather than unbridled power. Each team will get three shots
to launch its marshmallow up to 50 feet—but not an inch more!—across
the lawn. The team with the highest total distance after the three tosses
(for a maximum of 150 feet) will be declared the winner.
For more information about Tuesday's competition, contact EGT Instructor Susan
Sherlock at (803) 981-7138 or ssherlock@yorktech.com.
