Commencement Exercises for the York Tech Class of
2007 to be Held May 15
ROCK HILL—York Technical College
will hold its commencement exercises for the class of 2007 on Tuesday,
May 15. The ceremony will take place at Byrnes Auditorium on the Winthrop University campus beginning at 7:00 p.m.
This year, there are
632 candidates for graduation. Of those, 393 are candidates for
associate degrees and 72 are candidates for diplomas. An additional
167
students will receive certificates for completing programs that are less
than one year in length.
Approximately 260
students are expected to take part in Tuesday’s ceremony.
Dr. Barry Russell, president of
the South Carolina Technical College System, will
deliver the commencement address. Prior to joining the system
office in January 2006, Russell served as president of Midlands
Technical College in Columbia and executive vice president and chief
operating officer of the North Carolina Community College System.
Also at the ceremony, the
college will recognize Thi Le as the winner of this year's Distinguished
Alumnus Award. Thi is a successful entrepreneur, but that is only a
small part of this remarkable woman's story. She came to this country at
age 15 from Vietnam with nothing, but her passion for education and hard
work has made her a respected community leader and business person.
Thi graduated from York Tech in
1981 with an associate's degree in business. She now owns restaurants in
Rock Hill and Charlotte and has served the community through work with
the Rock Hill School District Foundation Board, the Red Cross Board, and
the city's "No Room for Racism" committee, to name just a few.
