Public Speaking Classes Contribute More Than 1,000 Menís Personal Items to Library Clubís Menís Shelter Collection Drive

May 12, 2010

ROCK HILLóThe York Technical College Library Club recently sponsored a collection of personal toiletry items for the Havenís Menís Shelter in Rock Hill. Students in York Technical Collegeís Public Speaking classes contributed more than 1,000 menís personal items toward the Library Clubís collection efforts as part of a service learning opportunity sponsored by their instructor, Monique Perry.  Perry challenged all of her students to make contributions to support the Library Clubís efforts over a two-week period. Current Public Speaking students from Chester, Kershaw and Rock Hill contributed to the effort along with dual enrollment students from Great Falls and Chester high schools.

ďIím so proud of the contributions of our students," said Perry. "Many of my Public Speaking students are currently in transition with employment and other challenging life circumstances. In light of their personal situations, they went above and beyond to contribute to this effort. It speaks highly of their character and the importance that our students place on giving
back to the community.ď

After the delivery of the collection, the Library Club and Public Speaking students received commendations from Jessica Lynn, Executive Director of The Havenís Menís Shelter.

ďSingle men experiencing homelessness are too often an invisible population," Lynn said. "I am so happy to see that you are encouraging students at York Tech to open their eyes to all individuals in our community that need assistance in regaining stability in their lives."

The Library Club maintains a strong commitment to the community and provides supplies to help those in need whenever possible.

ďMany Library Club members and employees have been touched by homelessness currently or in the past,ď said Debbie Jones, Library Club Advisor.

The Library Club will continue to collect personal items for the Havenís Menís Shelter. Ms. Perryís Public Speaking classes will also continue to contribute to the Library Clubís efforts each semester as a service learning project.
