York Tech, Comporium to Hold 'Hackathon' Competition at The Hive

ROCK HILL, SC Teams of two to four members each are invited to compete in a 24-hour hackathon developed by York Technical College and sponsored by Zipstream, Comporium’s new gigabit broadband, at The Hive in downtown Rock Hill.

A hackathon is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on a playful, exploratory project.

Beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 13, the competition will kick off. Up to 54 participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and creativity by developing a unique solution to a business challenge. Each team will be tasked with designing a series of web pages or a mobile application.

“We want them to design the best and most innovative prototype possible within the 24-hour period,” said York Tech’s Dr. Edie Dille, associate dean for business and information technology.

Dille said that the contestants would likely be “pulling an all nighter,” fortified by plenty of energy drinks, water and soda; as well as, a dinner Friday night, breakfast Saturday morning and a lunch Saturday before the work concludes and the winners are announced at 3:30 p.m.

“We called the event ‘Wired Hack’ because of all those energy drinks they’ll be having,” Dille said.

In addition, the competition theme was sparked by the fact that Comporium has wired The Hive with very fast Internet speed that will supply all the bandwidth the contestants will need.

Teams will be required to put together a short presentation to present to a panel of judges and the audience.  The winning team’s members will each receive a mini iPad and a free upgrade on their Comporium Internet service for three months; second place team members will receive a 5 TB external hard drive; third place will earn an iPad Nano 16 GB.

Wired Hack is one of several events during “Geek Week.”  For further details or to register visit  http://www.yorktech.edu/itdept/TechWeek/techweek.html
