GREENVILLE—York
Technical College student Sondra Gladden was named the
winner of the 2005 Carolina Careers Governor’s Award during a ceremony
yesterday hosted by the S.C. Department of Education at Greenville's
Palmetto Expo Center.
Gladden’s win in the two-year college category marks the sixth year in a row
the award has gone to a York Tech student.
In the fall of 2004, Gladden
participated in an unpaid office assistant internship with the training
department of Bowater Inc. But Gladden's skills and work ethic resulted
in an assignment as a paid co-op. And she still works there.
Gladden
will graduate in December with an
associate degree in Management with a Human Resources Specialization.
She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average while balancing family,
church, and educational responsibilities. Gladden has also found time to
serve on the college's Dean's Council, which promotes student input for
college processes and encourages student communication with faculty and
administration.
