York Technical College Tuition Holds Steady for 2007-2008

July 2, 2007

ROCK HILL—York Technical College officials cited concerns about students' out-of-pocket costs as a key factor in their decision to not increase tuition for the 2007-2008 academic year. For the fall 2007 semester, full-time tuition for York County residents will remain at $1,494 and $1,656 for out-of-county students.

Enrollment at the college continues to grow. For the 2006-2007 academic year, enrollment in the college's credit programs was 6,497 students—an increase of five percent from the previous academic year.  Enrollment in the college’s continuing education program has grown to more than 9,000.

"The faculty and staff of York Technical College have been tremendously effective in providing quality education and training programs while at the same time being efficient,” said York Technical College President Dr. Greg Rutherford. “We would like State support to be more, but we are sensitive to the financial constraints of our students. We are glad that we can hold the line on tuition this year."

“It is important to our College Commission that York Technical College remain accessible to our citizens. This is especially true for the many people who are impacted by recent plant closures,” said Tony Vaughan, Chair of the York Technical College Area Commission.

In 2006-07, the average tuition at the state's technical colleges was approximately $3000—34% of the average research institution tuition ($8,600) and 40% of the average teaching institution tuition (nearly $7,400).

York Tech officials expect their decision to maintain current tuition for the coming academic year will have a positive impact on students when fall classes begin on August 20. The college is also waiting for information from the Commission on Higher Education and the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education on the amount of lottery tuition assistance that will be made available to students who attend any of the state’s 16 technical colleges. Currently, the maximum amount of lottery-funded tuition assistance is $948 per semester for full-time students and $79 per credit hour for eligible part-time students.
