ROCK HILL—On
September 17, in celebration of Constitution Day, York Technical
College will host a unique day-long event that will highlight Shays’
Rebellion, one of the most overlooked, but historically significant
events in American history. Everyone is invited to attend. The event
will take place from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. in room L-113 of the Anne
Springs Close Library on the York Tech campus. The day will include
historical reenactments at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. as well as ongoing
displays, videos
and the launch of a new interactive website dedicated to helping 21st
century Americans better understand the nature of our Constitution and
how it came to be. Refreshments will be served.
Local schools have been invited to attend the event and experience an
interactive exploration of the unique period in American history between
the end of the Revolutionary War and the drafting of our Constitution.
The event is being held in partnership with other colleges around the
country, including Springfield (Mass.) Technical Community College,
which developed the website that will bring Shays’ Rebellion to life.
Once launched, Shays’ Rebellion & the Making of a Nation will be
found at shaysrebellion.stcc.edu.
Funding for the website and events surrounding its Constitution Day
launch were provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
At the heart of Shays’ Rebellion and the discontent of the period just
after the Revolutionary War, lay fundamental questions regarding the
relationship of citizens to their government. The rebellion presents
perhaps the most dramatic example of the social, political, and economic
struggles of the years following the Revolution. The website explores
these struggles and the transformation of the U.S. from a government
founded on state authority into one based on the authority of the
citizens themselves—we the people.
