York Technical College Launches Linux Online Education Program

October 16, 2007

ROCK HILLThe Continuing Education Division of York Technical College is now offering a comprehensive, online Linux Self-Study Course. The course is being offered through the University Linux Learning Collaborative, a new partnership between York Technical College and Just-in-Time Resources of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The collaborative brings together the expertise of an industry-leading Linux training provider with the resources of a public college dedicated to excellence in continuing and professional studies to provide the highest quality, most comprehensive Linux self-study material ever produced.

This self-study course for the IT professional is designed to assist students in passing the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) first level certification exams. LPI is considered the industry standard for excellence in Linux skills and knowledge for IT professionals.

Predominantly used in servers, the Linux operating system is used in numerous domains, including desktop computers, supercomputers, mainframes, and embedded devices, such as cell phones. Linux has gained the support of corporations like IBM, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, Novell and Red Hat. Significant progress has been made recently in increasing hardware compatibility for many Linux distributions and this has sparked a rapid growth in the Linux market.

The LPIC-1 training offered by the University Linux Learning Collaborative provides the latest information about the Linux operating system via streamed video and online text. It allows participants to learn anytime, anywhere and avoid spending time at expensive, weeklong “bootcamps.”

David Ruiter of Just-in-time Resources points to the advantages of using the Internet to deliver the training. “With all training modules online, students can refer back to earlier lessons and refresh their memories, or scroll ahead to see what they’ll need to learn for an upcoming project.”

LPC-1 certification is one of the first steps for any IT professional considering a future in Linux. The LPI certification is considered the industry standard worldwide for Linux technicians. Prospective students can learn more and register for the course or a free test drive of two online sessions at https://www.linuxselfstudy.com/york.

Registration for online access to the Linux Self-Study course is $295. A hard copy of the complete manual and DVDs can be purchased for an additional $150. For more information, please contact Katie Dykhuis at (803) 981-7372 or kdykhuis@yorktech.com.
