General Contractor Selected for Chester Center Project

October 30, 2007

ROCK HILL, SC —The new Chester Center has moved closer to reality following the selection of a general contractor.  York Technical College officials announced today that Farley Associates Inc., based in Fort Mill, has been awarded the contract for the construction project.

Construction of the new Center will begin immediately. The 31,211-square-foot facility will be built on a 40-acre site off S.C. 9, east of Chester.  Construction of the facility will take about one year to complete.

“Today’s announcement represents a significant milestone in fulfilling our shared vision of building a higher education facility with state-of-art laboratories and classrooms in Chester County,” said Dr. Greg Rutherford, president of York Technical College.   “Many dedicated people have worked diligently for many years to get here.  I am profoundly grateful for their efforts and ongoing support,” said Rutherford.

"We also greatly appreciate the leadership and backing of the Chester County Council, Senator Linda Short and the legislative delegation.  Their commitment, along with the generosity of private donors, will have a far reaching impact on generations of Chester County residents,” said Rutherford.

A significant amount of work preparing the site for the building phase already has been completed. The infrastructure, including roads, water and sewer lines, electricity and street lights, is in place.  Also, preliminary grading of the site has been completed.

Farley Associates Inc. was founded in 1970 and has built more than 150 public projects.

York Technical College’s current operations in Chester are based in the former Duke Energy Office located at 127 Saluda Street, next to the post office, in downtown Chester.  The temporary facility includes space for a large classroom that can accommodate 25 students, a computer lab/classroom for 15 students, a distance learning classroom, an assessment center, a library area with PCs for student use, and plenty of parking.

The Saluda Street facility’s hours of operation are 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Fridays.
