CHESTER—York
Technical College recently named Melanie Gallman as coordinator of its
new Chester Workforce & Learning Success Center. Gallman, a graduate of
Lewisville High School, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business
Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from Winthrop University as
well as a Masters of Education degree in Divergent Learning from
Columbia College. She is currently working in the doctoral program of
Argosy University in Educational/Organizational Leadership.
Gallman worked previously with the South Carolina Employment Security
Commission as a WIA case manager/trade coordinator. She also has
experience as a site coordinator for the Learning Key Tutoring Program—a
reading/math program designed to assist elementary students K5 through
5th grade—in
Chester. Gallman has also served as a business education teacher at
Lewisville High School.
The Chester Workforce and Learning Success Center,
which is housed within the college's Saluda Street facility (127 Saluda
St.), provides career assessment and essential work skills training for
those who are currently unemployed as well as adult education students,
high school students and current York Tech students.
The Center houses learning coaches to tailor individualized learning
plans to help build the study skills, habits, and positive attitudes
needed to succeed in school or work. Some other services that are
provided are employability skills workshops; Soft Skills Workshops;
lab-enhanced academic skills such as reading, math, and locating
information, Career-Ready Workforce training, Study Sills Preparation,
and a summer program for high school juniors and seniors (ages 16+).
The Center has been
launched at a critical time for Chester County, which currently has an
unemployment rate of more than 20 percent, third highest in the state.
