ROCK HILL—More than 400 middle
school students from the region will compete in a nationwide
robotics competition to be held at York Technical College on
Friday, December 1. The competition at York Tech is now a
regional qualifying event for the state FLL tournament to be
held at the University of South Carolina in January 2007,
and teams garnering top honors on Friday will move on to the
state competition.
The event, sponsored by the FIRST LEGO
League (FLL), combines hands-on, interactive robotics using
the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Invention System with the
atmosphere of a sporting event. The program is co-sponsored
by FIRST, an organization whose mission is to excite young
people about the fun, accessibility, and importance of
science and engineering, and the LEGO Company.
Friday's competition will begin at
10 a.m. at the college’s Baxter Hood Center and will
conclude at approximately 4 p.m. Peak action is expected at
about noon.
This year's competition has attracted
40 teams consisting of 10 players each from across the
region. Teams face an assigned "challenge" emulating a real
world event or situation and must research, plan, build,
program and test a fully autonomous robot capable of
accomplishing the challenge. The following school districts
have sent teams to this year’s competition:
Chester
Clover
Fort Mill
Greenville
Lancaster
Lexington 5
Rock Hill 3
Spartanburg 6
York
