York Technical College to Host Annual Robotics Competition
November 29, 2010
ROCK HILL—On Friday, December 3, middle school students from across the region will compete in a nationwide robotics competition to be held at York Technical College. The top 7 teams from Friday’s competition will advance to the state championship.
The event, sponsored by the FIRST LEGO League, combines hands-on, interactive robotics using the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Invention System with the atmosphere of a sporting event. The program is co-sponsored by
the LEGO Company and FIRST, an organization whose mission is to excite young people about the fun, accessibility and importance of science and engineering.
The competition begins at 9 a.m. at the college’s Institute for Manufacturing Productivity and will conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m. Peak action is expected between 10 a.m. and noon.
This year's competition is expected to attract 18 teams
(consisting of 10 players each). Teams face an assigned "challenge" emulating a real world event or situation and must research, plan, build, program and test a fully autonomous robot capable of accomplishing the challenge.
Through this year’s Body Forward™ Challenge, competitors will explore the cutting-edge world of biomedical engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body's potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives. This valuable competition allows students the freedom to creatively solve problems, develop communication skills, hone teamwork skills and practice presentations skills.
