ROCK HILL—York
Technical College Engineering Technology students will battle it out
beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 6, to determine who has built
the strongest bridge from toothpicks.
Testing of the bridges will take place in
the college's Institute for Manufacturing Productivity.
Students, working in pairs, built the
foot-long bridges as part of a class assignment. Forty percent of the
project's grade will be riding on the results of the competition.
The object of the assignment was to
build the strongest, lightest bridge possible. The winner of the contest
will be the team that finishes with the best ratio of bridge weight to
load. To test the load bearing capacity of the bridges, sand will be
slowly added to buckets on the bridges until the bridges fail, that is,
collapse or bend beyond what is allowed by the contest rules.
For more information about the
contest, call Susan Roberts at (803) 981-7138.
