ROCK
HILL—The amount of lottery-funded tuition
assistance (LTA) available to students who attend any of the state’s
16 technical colleges during the spring 2008 semester has been finalized. The maximum
amount of LTA for the spring semester
has been set at $912 per semester for full-time students (12
or more credit hours) and $76 per credit hour for eligible part-time
students.
LTA offsets more than
one-half of the tuition amount for full-time in-county students. More than 2,000 York Tech
students receive lottery-funded tuition assistance.
Earlier this year,
York Technical College officials
announced their decision not to increase tuition for the 2007-2008
academic year. For the spring 2008 semester, full-time tuition for
York County residents will remain at $1,494 and $1,656 for
out-of-county students. College officials cited concerns about
students' out-of-pocket costs as a key factor in their decision.
Spring credit classes begin
January 9.
To be eligible for LTA, students must meet the following requirements:
-
Complete a 2007-2008 FAFSA (see exceptions to
this requirement below). The forms can be
found online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and at all technical
colleges;
-
Qualify for in-state tuition rates
and must have been a South Carolina resident for at least one year;
-
Be enrolled in a certificate, diploma or
associate degree program and maintain at least six credit hours
each semester;
-
Make clear progress toward completion of a
certificate, diploma or associate degree;
-
Not be
eligible for a LIFE scholarship;
-
Not be in default on any government student
loan program.
The FAFSA requirement may be waived if:
-
The applicant is a high school student
enrolled in a dual enrollment program;
-
The applicant already has earned a bachelor's
degree and will provide a transcript or copy of his/her diploma;
-
The applicant
is enrolled in a program that is not eligible for Title IV aid;
-
The applicant is a dependent student who
cannot obtain his or her parents' or guardian's tax form(s) and
a college official has made a professional judgment to that
effect.
