York Tech, CAA Announce New Property Maintenance Technician Program

December 7, 2004

ROCK HILL—On Thursday, December 9, representatives from York Technical College and the Charlotte Apartment Association (CAA) will announce the launch of a new Property Maintenance Technician program at the college.

Thursday's press conference will be held at the business office of the Cowan Farm apartment community, 1310 Cypress Point Dr. off Anderson Rd. in Rock Hill, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Beginning in January 2005, York Technical College’s Continuing Educating division will offer the new certificate program to address the growing need for qualified maintenance personnel at apartment communities and other facilities.

"The CAA is very pleased to be partnering with York Tech in this way," said John Porter, the president of the association's Board of Directors. "The apartment industry will continue to experience strong growth in the Carolinas and we need qualified men and women to provide top level service. The opportunities in our business are only multiplying and the CAA will continue to be proactive in meeting its members' needs. Many thanks to our partner, York Tech."

The course of study, consisting of 191 contact hours, will give students the skills to perform general maintenance and minor repairs as well as the knowledge to make sound decisions regarding the outsourcing of larger repair and maintenance projects.

Courses will be offered two days a week during evening hours, typically between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the York Tech campus in Rock Hill. Tuition for the program, which is designed to be completed in eight months, is $1500.

The program will include courses in the following:

  • Carpentry

  • Plumbing

  • Electrical

  • HVAC

  • Painting Prep/Painting

  • Small Appliance Repair

  • Budgeting

  • Inventory Control

Students interested in broadening their skill set and employment opportunities may also choose from elective courses which include Customer Service, Swimming Pool/Spa Training (also Pool/Spa State Board Certification Exam), Spanish in the Workplace, and Introduction to Computers. Tuition for these courses is not included in the cost of the core program.
