INTERIOR DECORATING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

 Classes are $180 each and meet from 6 - 9 pm

      Intro to Interior Environments -  Students will be introduced to the profession of interior design and decoration. They will develop an understanding of the responsibilities and career options of a decorator and the process required to attain the abilities necessary in this line of work. This course serves as a prerequisite for all modules in the certification program. 

   Drafting and Measuring - Instruction of basic drafting and lettering skills will be learned. Students will learn how to measure a room and draw it to scale. Students will also develop basic blueprint reading skills. Some computer drafting skills will be taught. This course serves as a pre requisite for space planning. Students will study a range of architectural and furniture styles necessary for selecting the appropriate features for various needs and tastes, includes historical study of early settler to the present.

   Space Planning -
Students will gain an understanding of positive and negative space, basic principals of space planning and how to place furniture into a residential home. In addition we will evaluate floor plans and learn how to determine the spatial needs of a client. Prerequisite: Drafting and Measuring.

   Furnishings - Students will acquire knowledge of furniture styles and their evolutions and how the styles have been adapted through history. Students will develop skills necessary for the selection furnishings for specific needs and learn how to evaluate the quality of furniture. Prerequisite: Drafting and Measuring. 

   Textiles, Windows, Walls, and Floors -
The focus of this course is to identify the characteristics and uses of textiles within the interior environment. Students will explore different types of window, wall and floor treatments and appropriate applications. Basic principals of measuring to calculate materials needed will be developed. Prerequisite: Drafting and Measuring. 

   Color and Lighting - Students will be taught the fundamentals of color and lighting and relationships to each other. Skills of developing color schemes will be taught. 

   Business, Policies, and Practices - Students will learn business techniques and policies specifically related to the interior Decorating field. Topics will include sales techniques, phone etiquette, professional presentations, resumes/portfolios, purchase orders, statements, contracts and other business procedures to ensure success in this field.
