OVERVIEW

People depend on law enforcement officers to protect their lives and property.  Depending upon the size of the law enforcement agency, officers perform their duties in a variety of ways.  Law enforcement officers maintain law and order, collect evidence and information, and conduct investigations and surveillance.

Police and detective work may potentially be very dangerous and stressful.  In addition to the obvious dangers such as confrontations with criminals, law enforcement officers need to be constantly alert and ready to respond appropriately in a number of other threatening situations.
