Automotive Advisory Council Minutes

Annual Lab/Equipment Evaluation

A meeting of the Automotive Advisory Council was held on March 25, 2003 at 7:00 P.M. in the automotive shop at York Technical College.  Members in attendance included Mark Abercrombie of Honda Cars of Rock Hill, Claude Lawson and Billy Hinson of Clinton Family Ford, Jason Currence of Burns Chevrolet, and Cathy Kerwin, Jim Currence, and Jamey Abercrombie of York Technical College.

Refreshments were served and the meeting began at 7:00 P.M. as scheduled. The first order of business was the reading of the minutes from the previous meeting held on November 12, 2002.  The minutes were approved as read by all members in attendance.

The second order of business was the lab/equipment evaluation.  Each member was given an evaluation sheet that covered the eight areas of instruction that are recognized by ASE.  Under each area of instruction the members were asked to evaluate if the equipment met the needs of the class and list any areas where additional equipment may be needed.

The evaluation sheets were returned with the following suggestions.  It was suggested that a small welder be purchased to do small welding jobs and fabrications.  Smaller jacks that are more appropriate for today’s cars are needed to replace the big jacks that we are currently using.  The latest software for our scanners needs to be purchased to enable us to diagnose newer cars with computer problems.  A smoke machine, that is being used by the dealerships to diagnose EVAP codes, is needed so the students have experience using this machine when they are hired after graduation.  Finally, the committee had some concerns about the first lift in the automotive shop.  This lift is the oldest in the shop and may need to be replaced in the near future.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 and copies of the evaluation forms were included in the minutes.

Respectfully submitted,
