Calendar: My students can’t see the calendar entries that I have loaded. What do I need to do to fix this? |
Look on your calendar. If the entries are italicized then the entries are “private”. To change the entries to “public,” click on the radio button to left of the entry, and click Edit at the bottom of the page. At the bottom of the edit page, you have your choice between Private and Public. Click on your choice of settings and click Update. The Public setting allows your students to see the entry, while the Private setting only allows you to see the entry. |
Seeing Files: I have placed new files in my course, but the students are not able to see them. What do I need to do to fix this?
You need to update the student view. Click on Control Panel in the upper left corner of your page. Click on the Update Student View command which is found at the bottom of the second column. Update the entire course. When the update is finished, scroll to the bottom of the page and click OK. The students should then be able to see the files. |
Seeing Grades: My students can’t see their grades. What do I need to do so they can see them?
There could be two problems. These problems can be fixed by going to Control Panel, then Manage Students, then Manage Columns. Click on the column that contains the grades that the students are not able to see. On the right, click on Release Column: Yes, and then Go. When that is completed, click on Hide Column: No, and then Go. This will ensure that the students see the item heading and the grade. |
Scrolls: I want to put a scroll across the top of my page. How do I do that?
On the homepage, click on Add Upper Textbox. In the textbox heading, type in the following: <marquee> and type in your text for the scroll</marquee>. You need both html tags the way they are written above. Finally, click on Add, to add the textbox to your page. |
Bulletin Board: Can I stop students from adding to old bulletin board threads?
Yes. Set up the bulletin board so that you have separate discussions (topics) for each module or thread. You can lock or unlock the topics as you desire. To lock a topic (which prevents students from having access to the topic), click the box for locked beside the topic you want locked. A check will appear in the block. To unlock the topic, click the same block. The check will then disappear which indicates that students have access to that topic. |
E-Mail: I sometimes need to e-mail several students at the same time. Is there a way to select them without having to send each one an e-mail individually?
Yes. Click on the e-mail icon; then compose message, and then Browse. To select several students, you need to hold down the control (CRTL) key and click on all the students you want to send the e-mail to. Now click Select at the top of the page. All the students that you selected are now on the address line of the e-mail. |
E-mail: I need to find out if I sent a student an e-mail to me. Is there an easier way than looking at all my e-mails?
Yes. Click on Search. You can then search your inbox or outbox. You will need to choose how you want to search and enter the student identification to match your method, such as last name and type in the students’ last name. All e-mails in the box you indicated for that student will then appear. |
E-Mail: Sometimes I have a long e-mail, and I keep losing it when the power blinks. How can I keep this from happening?
An easy way to get around the problem is to type your message in MS Word. If the power blinks, MS Word has an automatic recovery system. When you have the message typed, copy and paste it into the WebCT e-mail text area. |
Quizzes: Can I use Respondus to put tests in WebCT?
Yes. We have two computers in the ETC which have the Respondus program loaded on them. Call 327-8033 to make an appointment to use either of these computers. |
Quizzes: I loaded quizzes in WebCT using Respondus, but my students can’t see them. Why? |
You could have one of several problems. Be sure that you have a quiz icon. To add an icon, click on Add Page or Tool, and then click on Quizzes/Survey. This will allow the students to see the quizzes that you have loaded. If the students see the quiz title, but can’t open it, then check to see that you have set the availability correctly.
