Many prospective and current students need some assistance as they plan for a successful future. In Career Services, students can receive professional career guidance in a friendly, one-on-one setting. The Career Development Coordinator can help students determine how to obtain the information they need to make a sound career choice. There are computerized career guidance tools available as well as paper-and-pencil assessments to help students identify their interests, skills and values.
The computerized career assessments available are SCOIS.NET and the Kuder Career Planning System. SCOIS stands for South Carolina Occupational Information System, and it offers a brief self-assessment that helps individuals consider their interests and how they relate to various careers. It also contains detailed information about hundreds of occupations, colleges, majors, financial aid resources, and much more.
The Kuder Career Planning System is an in-depth career guidance tool that contains three assessments. The first is an interest inventory that matches individuals’ interests with career clusters, or groupings. Students can research within their top clusters of interest to explore and consider occupations that they would most likely find appealing. The second is a self-reported skills assessment, in which personal strengths and weaknesses are evaluated and identified. The third is a work values assessment, which helps individuals consider what characteristics are important to them in their "ideal" job. The Kuder Career Planning System helps students piece together all of this relevant information together to make a well-informed career decision.
In addition to
computerized guidance assessments, Career Services also offers
Holland's Self Directed Search, which is a paper-and-pencil interest
assessment that many students find helpful as well.
