The meeting was held in the Conference Room of the new Institute for Manufacturing Productivity.  The meeting was opened by Tom Dickerson as he reviewed the minutes from the Advisory Committee meeting held September 25,2001.  The minutes were approved as read.  Then the agenda for the current meeting was reviewed.

Next, we moved on to Old Business from the September 25, 2001 meeting.  Michael Jones stated that he felt we should bring up the question of State-Wide competition in machining during the December 12, 2001 AMTRC meeting.  Then Mike McClain and Bobby Baker discussed Vicker competition for the local high schools.

Jim Carroll suggested using a database of machining skills competencies to also help evaluate the effectiveness of instruction given by the MTT program at York Technical College.  Jim Carroll also suggested that this competency score/information may be useful to the student/graduate for employment purposes.   Mike McClain then mentioned that the college is working on a program to help students create a CD based portfolio.  Discussion of this program followed.  Jim Carroll also suggested the we survey the Human Relations personnel of local companies to determine what specific skills the various companies expect their employees to possess.

Our next order of business was to discuss Recruiting for the MTT program.  Mike McClain suggested that the MTT program at YTC partner with more industries to help train their current employees.  Jim Carroll stated that to partner with a specific company, the MTT program needs to provide a specific skill set that the company feels it’s employees do not have, but do need, such as knowledge of ISO 2002 or a “lean and mean” manufacturing short course.  Jim Carroll also suggested that the MTT faculty should use the Tech-South show in Charlotte to recruit students.  Tom Dickerson suggested that maybe we should look at creating a CD that highlights the skills taught in the MTT program at YTC.  Jim Carroll suggested that this CD should be interactive so that a person could find  exactly the skills that they want to see.  Charles Edwards then suggested that MTT Faculty tour local industry to see the various skills at work in the companies and then present as a resource to help a person gain these specific skills.

The meeting was then adjourned at 7:30 P.M.
