CAREER FACTS:

Environmental science technicians who perform lab tests to monitor environmental resources and measure pollution in the environment.  Some manage hazardous materials inventory, or assist with regulatory compliance.

Occupational health and safety specialists who help keep workplaces and workers safe.

Chemical Laboratory technicians set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments and do experiments. They must keep excellent records and use computers. Those who work with manufacturing processes may be involved in ensuring quality by testing products for proper proportions of ingredients, purity, or for strength and durability.

Most employers prefer applicants who have at least an associate degree. Because employers' preferences vary, however, some science technicians have a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or forensic science, or have taken numerous science and math courses in college.

Employment in these areas is expected to grow 9 TO 17% through 2014 due to public demand for safe and healthy work environments.  190,000 jobs exist for these areas.  http://www.bls.gov/home.htm

Median annual earnings of biology, chemistry, forensic, forest, and environmental technicians were approximately $35, 339 in 2005.  Median annual earnings of occupational health and safety specialists were $51,570 in May 2004.  The highest 10 percent earned more than $79,530.  http://www.bls.gov/home.htm
