John D. Ratliff, CST, FAST, AAS

Mr. Ratliff became the Department Manager of the Surgical Technology Program at York Technical College in August 2008. Prior to coming to York Technical College, Mr. Ratliff was an instructor at Southeast Community College in Lincoln Nebraska for over five and a half years.

Mr. Ratliff graduated from Mt. Hood Community College in Portland Oregon in 1994. After graduation he moved to Louisville, Kentucky.  Mr. Ratliff was on the Pediatric Heart Team at Norton/Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville. This is also where Mr. Ratliff met his wife Barb, who is an RN and Infection Control Nurse.

Mr. Ratliff was a traveling CST for over five years. He accepted his first traveling assignment in October 1995 in Rapid City S.D. Five years and 3 months later, he and his wife Barb finally settled down in Lincoln. In the five years as a traveler Mr. Ratliff worked in Phoenix, AZ; South Bend  IN; Charlotte  NC; Durango,  CO; Indianapolis, IN;  Reno, NV; Atlanta, GA; Ashland, KY; Omaha  NE;  Cincinnati, OH;  Chico CA; and finally, Lincoln, NE.

Traveling was not only fun and exciting, but it offered Mr. Ratliff many challenges. He had the opportunity to Scrub Open Heart, Trauma, and Transplant surgery and has scrubbed almost every surgical specialty at one time or another

Mr. Ratliff is very involved in his profession. With the help of several of his students he formed the Nebraska State Assembly of AST in 2004 and was the President until his move to South Carolina in 2008. He served on the AST Government and Public Affairs Committee in 2006 and as Chair-person in 2007.  In 2007 Mr. Ratliff was elected to the Association of Surgical Technologists Board of Directors where he served from 2007-2009.  He has also served as a site visitor for the ARC-STSA since 2003. Mr. Ratliff currently serves on the South Carolina State Assembly of AST Board of Directors, where he was elected in October 2009.

He has received several honors from the Association of Surgical Technologists. He received the President’s Award in 2005, Fellowship Designation in 2008 and AST Educator of the year in 2008.

Mr. Ratliff is currently working on his Bachelor’s Degree in Adult Education from Bellevue University and is expected to graduate in 2010.

Mr. Ratliff and his wife Barb were married in 1997. They have two children, Zane and Gracean (Gigi).  He is also the proud father of Andrew, Matthew, Kandice and Kyle and Grandfather to Lily and Poppy and Sweet Pea.

Sandra Farley, CST

Mrs. Farley received her education in Surgical Technology at Spartanburg Technical College and graduated with a diploma in 1997.  Mrs. Farley passed the National Certification Exam in 1997 and maintains certification with currency through the NBSTSA.  In 2001 Mrs. Farley obtained an Associate in Occupational Technology: General Technology-Surgical Technology.  In 2006 she was recognized as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician through IAHCSMM. 

Clinical experience was obtained through Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where Mrs. Farley worked for 10 years full-time and continues to scrub on a PRN basis.  Mrs. Farley has private scrubbed in plastic surgery, urology and has worked in OR’s throughout North and South Carolina with Carolina Autotransfusion, INC, a cell salvage company as a Clinical Blood Specialist

Mrs. Farley is a member of the Association of Surgical Technologists, the SC State Assembly of Surgical Technologists, where she serves as the President.  Mrs. Farley is an approved site visitor through ARC-STSA.

Wanda Diane Brown, CST, LPN   

Ms. Brown graduated in 1988 from the Chester County Career Development Center in the Licensed Practical Nursing Program and from York Technical College's Surgical Technology Program in 1993.  Ms. Brown was issued her certification in January 2000 from the LCC-ST.

Ms. Brown is presently employed at Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville in the operating room as a CST; as well as the Sterile Processing Department at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC as well as serving as adjunct faculty for the Central Sterile Processing program at York Technical College.

Ms. Brown holds several certificates including Phlebotomy, Nursing Assistant, Substitute Teacher and is now preparing for the CSP exam.

Ms. Brown has worked in the hospital setting for the last 16 years and has worked in all areas of the hospital from ICU and ER as well as in Nursing Homes and Doctor's offices.

Ms. Brown serves as adjunct faculty for Central Service Certificate Program.
