Case Study: Terranova Forest Products Drawing Calibration

July, 2004

And

The Institute for Manufacturing Productivity
At York Technical College

Reported By:  William W. Beaver, P.E.

BACKGROUND:

The SCMEP has requested the Institute for Manufacturing Productivity (IMP) to measure dimensions on drawings produced by Terranova Forest Products for calibration of the drawings.  The measurements shall be traceable to N.I.S.T. for metrology verification.  Terranova Forest Products is in the process of developing a Quality Management System that conforms to ISO 9001.  Two master drawings were submitted to be verified to tolerance as specified on the drawings.  The drawings are included in this report.

APPROACH:

The following strategies and goals were identified to guide the project:

STRATEGY

GOALS

1.       Measure the dimensions printed on the drawings with the IMP’s Mitutotyo Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) with RAM Optical Probe.

1.          Compare the CMM data to the specified dimensions and tolerance of the drawings.

2.          All measurements to be preformed with equipment calibrated and traceable to the N.I.S.T.

3.          Non-contact measurement method with 75-power magnification to be employed.

SUMMARY OF STRATEGY 1:

The IMP used the following equipment to perform measurements:

1.     Mitutoyo Crysta Plus 504 DCC CMM, Serial Number 0242212.

2 RAM Optical Instrumentation Optical Video Probe, Serial Number 077.

William W. Beaver, P.E. performed the measurements.

See Appendix A for calibration records of equipment and training records of the engineer performing the measurements.

Copies of the drawings to be measured were made and identification of the dimensions established.  See Appendix B for identification of the dimensions.

Measurements were performed with the vision probe set at 75 X power magnification, and recorded by the CMM.  See Appendix C for data directly from the CMM.

Data from the CMM was transformed into information and summarized below.

CONCLUSIONS:

All dimensions measured are located within the specified tolerances.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

The engineer noticed the printed lines vary in thickness from 0.0057” to 0.0101”.  The specified Drawing Tolerance is +0.010, -0.03125”.

The metrology engineer recommends the following specification added to the drawings:

1.                   Tolerances for angle dimensions,

2.                   Specify the location on the line of the dimension, i.e. center of line, outer edge or inner edge of line.

The engineer also recommends reviewing the tolerance specifications and determining whether they are fit-for-use.
